3. Kilometre Squares

To stand on (or touch by hand when sea conditions or the shape of the available land precludes a safe landing) as many as possible of the 1 km squares of the Ordnance Survey National Grid within which there is some land, of any size, and which is above high water in calm conditions. There is a total of 2,248 such squares, 10 of which have been accessed by touching. These were Muckle Roe, W side, 1 July 2005; Yell Sound (5), 8 July 2005; Fair Isle (3), 10 June 2007; Foula, 30 June 2007. There remains 10 to be visited, most requiring very fine weather. The first column contains the Ordnance Survey National Grid 10 × 10 km square reference. The number of 1 × 1 km squares within the larger square is given in the second column. Squares containing only salt water with no land at all are excluded. The third column gives the number of squares not visited. Their identity appears in the fourth column.
